The 2nd ¡Presente! Conference on February 9-10, 2018 at UC Riverside will feature Gabby Rivera, Juniperangelica Cordova, Bamby Salcedo, and 14 workshops and programs. While applications are still being accepted for the Wait List to attend Saturday's events, Friday's opening featuring Gabby Rivera will be free and open to all.
Gabby Rivera is an outgoing, outspoken creator invested in fostering better dialogue, inspiring radical creativity, and improving our most vulnerable communities. The author of Juliet Takes a Breath, she’s also the writer of the new Marvel series America—featuring the first queer, Latinx teen-girl superhero, ever—that’s catching headlines from The New York Times, CNN, Vogue, and beyond. She will speak on "Inspiring Radical Creativity." Her talk is free and open to all on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 7pm in HUB 302. ASL interpretation provided.
Juniperangelica Cordova is a young, brown,
queer, trans femme from Azusa, Ca. As the child of an immigrant father and
chingona mother, Juniperangelica’s perspective and passion stems from the roots
of her people and the goals of liberation. Juniperangelica's work and wisdom
is informed by her experiences navigating the world as a homeless teenager for
6 years, while understanding school to be her sanctuary. As a transfer student
from Citrus College, Juniperangelica is studying the intersections of social
resistance and state repression at the University of California, Berkeley,
where she also serves as a member of the ASUC Senate. Juniperangelica’s work
for social justice is fueled by the next generation and her love for her
niblings Adrian & Jackie. “They tried to bury us, they didn’t know we were
seeds.” -Mexican Proverb
Baby Salcedo is the President and CEO of the TransLatin@ Coalition,
a national organization that focuses on addressing the issues of transgender
Latinxs in the US. Bamby has served and participated in many local, national
and international organizations and planning groups. This work mediates
intersections of race, gender, sexuality, age, social class, HIV+ status,
immigration status and more. She is returning to the ¡Presente! Conference, a Madrina to young folx in her community.
The 2nd ¡Presente! Conference is organized by La Familia de UCR, Chicano Student Programs, and the LGBT Resource Center, and is co-sponsored by the Associated Students Program Board* and The California Endowment. The 2nd ¡Presente! Conference is supported by the Highlander Empowerment Referendum.
